Hello and welcome back to Keesling’s Corner!
Posts have slowed down recently, but my Fall 2024 classes have concluded! So, I am currently trying to set some boundaries and goals regarding this Substack.
As we all know, life does not cease to be busy! Because of this, I have been considering having a semi-frequent newsletter-like post. Right now I think the newsletter-like posts could describe how life is going, what I am researching, and things of that nature. The working title is what you’ve seen here: “Corner Catch-Up #.” If there are specific things you all would like to hear about from my personal life, let me know in the comments down below. I’ll at least take them into consideration going forward!
So, without further adieu, here’s the first run! This fall season has been quite the doozy.
BJU Press: I am grateful to say that work at BJU Press has remained steady as I learn how to help teachers and parents foster a biblical worldview in their students and children. Aside from general professional development, I have been working on several math textbooks and video courses—from 3rd grade math to 11th grade algebra 2. All textbooks, no matter their subject, contain worldview-formative aspects. Sometimes this worldview-formative instruction is implicit, sometimes explicit. This is true no matter whether the textbook company is secular or sacred in orientation. Worldview formation occurs. The challenge and beauty of worldview instruction in skills-courses like mathematics necessitates that we connect biblical instruction with true, real-world problems.
Furthermore, the 11th grade Bible textbook I worked on as one of the editors, Biblical Worldview Beyond the Basics, has been finished! For those interested, it’ll be available for order soon here.
NOBTS PhD: It goes without saying that I was reading and writing quite a bit for the PhD classes I took this semester. The topics have ranged from the intertextual connection between Deuteronomy and 2 Timothy to the progress of thought in Old Testament interpretation and theology. I have learned a lot, and it has continued to be a (positively) stretching experience.
Life: My wife, Elizabeth, is an M4 medical student. This year has been a blessing for her as she has been working in various hospitals and clinics in and around the Upstate. She has likewise learned a lot and been stretched to connect her head knowledge with heartfelt actions. Sin casts a dark shadow on creation, and doctors have a unique privilege to step into people’s vulnerable situations. I am so grateful for what the Lord has been doing in and through Elizabeth. Her heart for her patients has been a blessing to witness. Lastly, she is in the midst of applying and interviewing for residency programs across the Southeast.
Please be in prayer for God’s wisdom and discernment as I continue to pursue doctoral education, as I work with BJU Press on helping Christian educators do what they must, and as my wife and I wait for residency’s Match Day in March.
I pray I can spend the time needed to bring some of my writing drafts to completion, and I pray they will be helpful in your walk with the Lord, too.
Until next time, ever a pleasure, in Christ our King,
Kyle
Loved catching up with you! My retirement is still a whirlwind. Life is busy and full, which is a lot better than lazy and boring. :) God bless you and your wife. I will be praying she gets the best placement, in God's will.
